Summer internships are in full swing

The 2020 Maine Government Summer Internship Program welcomed 41 students placed in Maine state, municipal, and county government. The program offers full-time, 12-week work experience to student residents of Maine and those attending Maine colleges. The summer program is a unique opportunity for talented college students to work within Maine government.

This year, 30 interns are working in state departments ranging from Education, Labor, and Economic and Community Development to Environmental Protection, Agriculture Conservation and Forestry, and Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management. There are 11 municipal and county internships in locations from Saco to Rockport to Bridgton.

The undergraduate and graduate students interning in the program come from broad educational backgrounds including law, business, government, environmental studies, engineering, economics, and accounting. Utilizing their knowledge and skills gained at colleges and universities, these students work as GIS specialists, data analysts, infrastructure analysts, hydrogeology assistants, laboratory assistants, marketing and planning specialists, media content creators, and tourist development assistants to name a few. Many students express interest in pursuing a career in government or public service.

The MCS Policy Center pairs each intern with a host agency, department, or municipality and matches them with a direct supervisor. Their host supervisors and departments assign multiple projects to the students and benefit from their skills, enthusiasm, and fresh approach to the issues facing their offices and communities. The students gain professional work experience, invaluable networking opportunities, and insights into the functions of local and state governments.

This year’s internships will clearly be different due to the presence of Covid-19. While some interns are at their job sites, many have started with remote work, and most hope to transition to their offices during the summer as government offices re-open. After completing their college spring semesters remotely they are already skilled at online working and learning. We look forward to what they accomplish!
