Rubin to Preside over Lectern Session at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine

Director of the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center, Jonathan Rubin, will be the presiding officer for Lectern Session 1764 at the 99th annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine on Wednesday, January 15. The session, entitled “Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Transportation: State Best Practices and Experience,” seeks to explore methods for state Departments of Transportation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Transportation, of course, is an essential element for modern life, but it also contributes substantially to greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the availability of methods to reduce greenhouse gases, state Departments of Transportation face challenges to integrate emission reductions into their planning and programming processes. Some of the obstacles confronted by these agencies include limited funding, incomplete data, and lack of staff to execute essential tasks and develop programs designed to reduce greenhouse gases.

The participants of the session, including representatives from select state Departments of Transportation, will discuss the successes and challenges they have experienced in assessing greenhouse gas emissions and evaluating greenhouse gas reduction opportunities through planning and programming, design, environmental review, construction, maintenance and operations.
