Aliya Uteuova – Maine NEWL Taught Me to Take Advantage of Opportunities
Aliya Uteuova a 3rd year political science and journalism student from Kazakstan attending the University of Maine describes the impact of Maine NEW Leadership. She learned about the variety of ways that women serve in politics and in political systems in the United States and discovered the role of women in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics fields. NEW Leadership brought Aliya more confidence in her own ability for pursuing a career in politics. The program illustrated for her that she should apply for other grants, scholarships, and programs. After NEWL she applied for and received an internship in the Senate Democratic Office in Augusta. Overall, Maine NEW Leadership gave Uteuova the confidence to reach out and take advantage of the opportunities that exist for young people attending college and university.
