The on-line application process is now closed for 2013.

About the Program

The Program combines work experience with an educational program designed to provide students an opportunity to participate in and contribute to Maine State Government.

Intern positions are full-time, paid work experience and interns are considered temporary unclassified state employees. The program is administered by the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center (MCSPC) at the University of Maine. The program is a collaborative process involving the Office of the Governor, the Maine Bureau of Human Resources, numerous Maine state government agencies and the state employees who serve as intern supervisors.

Student Eligibility

  • In order to compete for the Internship Program, a student must currently be enrolled in a Maine college, or be a Maine resident enrolled elsewhere, and have successfully completed a minimum of two years of college.
  • Students currently graduating from undergraduate and graduate programs also are eligible.
  • Students who previously have participated as interns in this program are not eligible.

Selection Criteria

The Internship Selection Committee reviews the applications and makes final selections by identifying those students who best match the requirements for each position. Consideration is given to participation by both men and women, education of the applicant, and previous work experience in relation to requirements of the internship positions available.

Placement Location

Most interns will be placed with state agencies in the Augusta area.

Academic Credit

Students seeking academic credit must make arrangements with their academic advisor at their own college or university. The Maine State Government Summer Internship Program does not grant academic credit.

Compensation

All interns will receive $9.00 per hour, funded by the state agency (certain withholdings and contributions will apply).

Educational Component and Awards Ceremony

The Program includes an educational component, which requires that interns attend a seminar in Augusta. In addition, the program will conclude with a reception, at which interns will be awarded a Certificate of Completion by the Governor or a designee.

Dates for the 2013 program:

The 2013 Maine State Government Summer Internship Program will run for a total of 12 weeks between Tuesday, May 28, and Friday, August 16.
